Are Butterfly Clips A 90s Thing?

As much as we miss all of our favorite hairstyles from the past, we're not crazy enough to welcome back everything from Claire's clearance bin. That's why the retro hair accessories that come back around aren't the neon pink fluffy scrunchies and rhinestone-covered daisy clips that were everywhere, but the ones that feel a little more timeless, like the tortoiseshell claw clip and the classic banana clip. They're not here to scare us, but to remind us of simpler times before Dyson hair dryers and balayage hair color. We're talking about frosted tip times, and nothing will humble you like looking at those pictures.

Butterfly clips, which were popular in the 1990s and which we used to buy in bulk at the mall, are making a comeback right now. They're small, useful, and full of character. Back in the day, they might have been used too much—no hairstyle should need ten butterfly clips—but we still think that the hair accessory can add a bit of fun to any boring hair day, even in 2020.

Butterfly clips were usually used to pull back pieces of hair from the crown of the head. This kept hair out of your eyes and gave you about as much attitude as your aunt on the day HomeGoods puts up Christmas decorations. Just one or two butterfly clips can add a bit of nostalgia and fun to any day now, which is something we can definitely get behind right now. Use it to pull your hair into a half-up style, to make a braid look longer, or to keep your bangs out of your face.In recent years, a number of old fashion trends have come back on the catwalk, so it was only a matter of time before hair accessories did the same. In the 1990s, there were a lot of great hair accessories that could make any style look better. These accessories, like scarves, beads, comb hairbands, and snap clips, let people be their most fun, real, and free-spirited selves.

But we like all kinds of fun hair accessories, but today we want to talk about butterfly clips. When they were first made, they were used to pull back pieces of hair from the crown of the head. However, they quickly became popular because of their intricate details and ability to make any hairstyle look effortlessly cool. Olivia Rodrigo, Doja Cat, and Megan Thee Stallion are just a few of the stars who have brought this classy trend into the modern day. If you're excited that butterfly clips are back, keep reading for ideas and tips on how to get each look.

Any hairstyle can be taken to the next level with a set of three butterfly clips, and Shannon Elizabeth's is no different. This is a classic butterfly clip style that many of us spent hours trying to make in our bedrooms.

Chambers says that you should first brush out and smooth your hair to get this look.

After your hair is smooth, make a part in the middle. Take an inch of hair from each side of your middle part and brush it through to make sure it's smooth. Do this at your hairline.

Pull this part back and use a clear elastic to hold it in place. Cover this with the butterfly clip, making sure to put both of them no more than three inches from your hairline.

Take a half-inch of hair from the left side of the middle part. Pull it back, brush it out, and use a clear elastic and a butterfly clip to hold this section of hair in place. Make sure they are parallel to the first section.

Do the same steps for the right side as you did for the left side.
