Are Butterfly Clips Trendy?

If there's one hairstyle that's perfect for dopamine dressing, which is the idea that you should wear things that make you feel better, it's hair clips. Clips of all kinds have been making a steady comeback, and they don't seem to be going away any time soon.

We've put together a list of 15 hair clips to add to your collection of accessories, whether you want one of these or something else. Find one (or two, or three) new favorites ahead. From tiny butterfly-shaped clips to bigger claw-shaped clips, it's hard to forget the claw clip's reign. Yes, if you were around between 1997 and 2001, you can easily remember many pop stars, models, tweens, and pretty much every girl wearing one (or more) of these trendy barrettes. We never turn down a good throwback, but we're especially happy to see this one back in the spotlight.

In its early days, the simple plastic barrette of the late '90s was as cool and easygoing as the actresses, rock stars, and models who wore them. But that was part of their appeal: they could be worn in many different ways. We'd been waiting for an easy-to-use basic colored clip, whether it was small, medium, or large, that could be used to make a wide range of styles quickly. Slowly but surely, the claw clip started to catch on, and when Gwyneth Paltrow wore one for the premiere of A Perfect Murder in 1998, the style was set in stone. The simple style was not only the height of '90s chic, but it was also chic and down-to-earth. We might also add that it went well with another '90s classic, the classy column dress.

Claw clips were the best way to get a "I woke up like this" hairstyle in the late 1990s. Cool-girl style was a quick pull back and flip of the hair into a tortoiseshell clip and a slight fall of an overgrown bang. From Rachel Green's many looks on Friends to Hallie Parker's iconic style in The Parent Trap, it was clear that the plastic barrette was worth more than its weight in style. But the craze for hair clips had just begun. As the '90s came to an end, the clips got bolder and brighter in the '00s, which brought in younger fans who wanted to make the style their own. In the 2000s, butterfly clips in many different colors became popular. Unlike the understated claw clip of the '90s, these cutesy, smaller clips were big and loud. They were part of a more-is-more trend that was meant to be shown off. Topanga from Boy Meets World and Sabrina from Sabrina the Teenage Witch both had glittered and pastel-colored hair at the time.
