What Is The New Butterfly Haircut?

I want to get a big haircut in a few months, but we'll see if I actually do it. In the meantime, I thought a cut like this, which shapes the overall shape without taking away length, would be perfect. Still, the For You page was full of trendy shags and wolf cuts, which made me want to add some layers to my look. I went to see Pjetraj at the Fekkai salon in SoHo to get his advice.

Taking into account the fact that my hair was long, thick, and curly, Pjetraj assured me that the cut would not look like a choppy shag on me, mostly because of how the butterfly layers blend together. "A butterfly cut has long, soft layers that start below the shoulders and are connected on the back," she said. "Most of the layers are built around butterfly wings that frame the face."

My hair felt so much lighter after the chop, but it didn't look much shorter. The beauty of the butterfly is that it changes shape but doesn't lose length (unless you also want your stylist to take things up a few inches in the process, that is). Pjetraj used a blow dryer and a round brush to style my hair. He pinned each section to keep the shape and give me the crazy-bouncy blowout of my dreams. Now that summer is here, it's time to start asking ourselves important questions like, "Should I go on vacation?" Fall in love? Change how my hair looks? Yes, yes, and yes for sure is the answer. If you want a new hairstyle, the butterfly haircut is a great choice. This layered cut is one of the few that lets you change things up without having to cut all of your hair off. (But that can also be fun!)

If you spend even a short amount of time scrolling through TikTok, you're bound to come across a creator whose layers are too bouncy and look like butterfly wings. Drea Dettmers, a hairstylist at Tallulah East Collective in Salt Lake City, Utah, says, "More and more clients are asking for butterfly haircuts, and they're all learning about them on TikTok." TikTok stars like Addison Rae and Matilda Djerf, as well as celebrities like Sydney Sweeny and Kaia Gerber, helped make the layered look popular.

The buzz is new, but the cut isn't. "If you look back at '90s glam or Rachel from Friends, you'll see the face-framing, full layers that make the butterfly cut what it is," says Teryn Tucker, a hairstylist at Alchemy Salon in Orlando, Florida. This time, hairstylist Sunnie Brook gave the cut the name "butterfly haircut" because it can be both short and long. This one haircut gives you two completely different looks, like a caterpillar and a butterfly, depending on how you style it.
